This would have been in the 1800's, I think. The last name of the adoptive parents was Suich, which is my last name, and he was adopted in Michigan. That's all that Gramma was able, or willing, to tell me. I would like to track down as much info as I can about his biological and adoptive families. Where should I start? Would the records of his adoption and families still exist? How accurate would they be? How willing is Michigan to release these records? I found out a few years ago that the original spelling of my last name may have been Szucz, and that it means furrier or fur-taker, in Hungarian. I get the impression from Gramma that her father-in-law's parents weren't immigrants themselves, but she was even a little vague on this point. I'm not sure in what part of Michigan they lived. All Other Information: My grandmother was adopted. Her birth date is 4-21-1914. She searched all her life for her biological parents and my sisters and i have picked up the search now that she's passed. Her adopted mother was named Dorothy Lent. We are not sure Lent was Dorothy’s real name as we’ve only found one document dated 1901 that shows Dorothy immigrating from NS, Canada. My grandmother's name is Una. Dorothy (b. between 1878 and 1885) and her partner Elizabeth Webb Upham (b. 1875) adopted at least 5 girls (Una, Faith, Joy, Ruth, Carol) between 1914 and 1934. Dorothy had one biological child named Hope (b. 1910). We've been told over the years that Dorothy was a nurse at a home for unwed mothers in Newark / Bloomfield, NJ, but it could have been NYC as well. There is also a strong connection to Iowa as my grandmother attended Elizabeth Lent's graduation from Palmer College (chiropractic school) in Iowa in 1918 (news! paper clipping). One of her adopted sisters (Faith) was institutionalized in 1940 (age 17) at the Chiropractic Psychopathic Sanitarium in Davenport, Iowa. Ruth (b. 4-?-1933) was almost 4 months old when the petition to adopt her was filed (on 8-22-1933). The petition was approved in 9-?-1933 ?. Ruth had been living with Dorothy in Bloomfield, NJ when the petition was filed. Ruth is the only sister we have adoption information on. We have no information on Dorothy Lent except for a 1901 immigration records from Nova Scotia, CA to Boston, MA. Her name was Lillian Pauline Sullivan aka Pauline Brooks aka Pauline Scott. Her date of birth is unknown. According to my adoption record she was born in North Carolina in 1937, however on original birth certificate, her age at the time of my birth was 23. This would make her born in 1933. In addition the record indicates that Brooks is her maiden name, while original birth certificate indicates Sullivan was her maiden name. Records state she was not married at the time of my birth.
