The story she has been told by her adoptive father is that the adoption wasn't legal and that through some bribery to a local official, the hospital (St. Anthony's in Michigan City) put the names of her adoptive parents on her birth certificate. So far, we have been unable to find any records of her adoption anywhere. My mother suspects that her "adoptive" father is truly her biological father. He has maintained that she is adopted for years. If he is indeed her biological father, the woman suspected to be her biological mother is dead. Her adoptive mother is dead as well. We may never know the answers we seek, but are searching just the same. My grandfather's story may be true!

All Other Information: I am submitting this request for my mother and her sisters who are seeking their baby sister that was put up for adoption. I apologize in advance for the lack of information I have, this is a new project and what I do have is the current recollections of pre-teens, 55 years ago. I am also going to be doing what I can from my end and will improve any details that the sisters come across or remember. The child was born, a girl, most likely between 4-?-1960 to 12-?-1960 ?. The siblings were spread among various family members so none of them were in contact with their birth mother during this time. The birth was at Souder Hospital in Auburn, IN. Souder Hospital closed in 1964, after the new DeKalb Memorial Hospital opened. The birth mother was Barbara Mae Sproat (maiden), last name at the time was most likely O'Connell. Birth father is unknown for sure but Barbara was still living with her husband, at least in the late summer of 1959 so it could be possible he may be listed as the birth father, Roderick O'Connell (Rod). Barbara's sister had always stated that the child had red hair but that cannot be confirmed. The child was immediately given up for adoption. The delivering doctor was a Dr. Coleman. He was also known to foster children and assist in accommodating adoptions. (Update) The placing of the child into foster care or adoption would have been soon after birth. (Update) Age of the birth mother would have been 31 years old at time of birth. Birth father is not for certain. As for other physical descriptions, all I have is an estimate that Barbara was about 5'6" tall, with pale skin and dark reddish hair. All of her children were estranged from her for much of their lives. The hospital that the birth took place at closed in 1964 so I imagine any records will be difficult to find there. As for Dr. Coleman, he passed several years ago and his wife recently passed so those recollections are also gone.

All Other Information: I was born 5-15-1960 or so my birth certificate says, adoption papers has me as baby girl Wilma, Adopted thru Catholic Charities of NW Indiana, not really sure where I was born so that is why I am posting here, my adoption papers say typed, Sangamon County, Illinois was place of birth but hence forth shall say Gary Indiana, the Sangamon County was crossed off and hand written in Gary Indiana, so all these years of searching I assumed Illinois was place of birth, But when Illinois opened up records she notified to tell me I was not born in Illinois and she called Indiana, they found my file there, but when I called Indiana for non-identifying information I was told she had nothing because I was not born in Indiana. but then calls back and dug deeper and said she had the non-identifying information. My non-identifying information is I was born Baby girl Wilma, on 5-15-1960,at 9:20 a.m. I weighed 6 lbS. 1 oz, birth mother was 16 years old at time of birth and she was born in Maryland. Birth father unknown. I have registered everywhere I can, also did a DNA test and found I am 51% Great Britain, Scandinavian & Irish! that is all I know! saw on Findme.org a birth mother was trying to find birth daughter in Martinsville, Indiana, but there is no place to see her profile or get in touch with her, they do all the cross matching and if you put one wrong thing in,(which is info you have and may or may not be right) they will not match you! This is the first time I ever ran across birth mother searching for birth daughter born on 5-15-1960. I even tried to put as little info in as possible but they never matched or notified me of a match, so not sure! So if there that can help would greatly appreciate it! If nothing else I would like to get my medical for my kids and grandkids.

My grandmother passed and never revealed anything about the adoption and out of respect none of us pressed her for information. Now that she has passed, I told my mom I would see if I could help in anyway. The story goes - my grandmother had a very close friend, Fern Young, who is the one who put my grandma in touch with the birth mother. It was said that Fern came upon the woman in a bathroom crying because she was pregnant. Which prompted her to contact my grandmother who was unable to have children. There is a possibility that she may have a twin brother. The research I have done leads me to believe that Fern, is my mother's grandmother. In pictures they have very similar facial features and mannerisms. She has a son named Billie, but he did not return my email when I reached out. Maybe he is the birth father ?. (Update) Linda is . 5'2" or 5'3" tall, with blue eyes and brown hair. DNA testing has been done with Ancestry.com. (Update) Through MyHeritage.com, a woman by the name of Sherry McKnight has been identified as a potential fourth cousin. We also believe that Ferrell Eugene Jones, may be her grandfather.

All Other Information: When My Aunt was in her teens they took her to we think Old Florence Crittenton from maybe 8-?-1960 and stayed there and worked there until she had to go to the Hospital to have Lynn. She rembers a christmas tree so the birth was around Christmas time or the first week of 1-?-1961 She had Lynn in a Hospital not for sure if it was Union Hospital or St.Anthony's but the Hospital was sold to Regional Hospital. I hope this Help's when my Aunt Retured back to her home town at the time was Evansville, Ind H My Aunt mom Told her the baby died. But my aunt she got to see the baby and hold it and wrote on her birth certificat before her mother got there. She is from Elkhart, IN. Birth father is deceased, cardiac event 7-?-2015, at least two siblings, myself and younger brother Steve (Texas) and one sister deceased Melody. I believe the birth mother still lives in Avilla, Indiana but not sure. My mother left a note before she died telling us that we had a half birth brother. Since then I have been able to confirm with other living relatives that he was given up for adoption at birth. Birth mother at birth would have been 20-21 years old ? and birth father 21-22 years old ?, not completely sure. Birth mother lived in Avilla at the time, birth father in Helmer In at the time. (Update) I know very little about the birth mother but the birth father is my birth father so those I can answer. He would have been 5'10" or 5'11" and around 160-170 lbs., with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He was born on 8-17-1937 to Toellner and Thelma Emrick, of Helmer Indiana, deceased 7-1-2015. I have blue eyes and dark brown hair which is now greying and weigh 245 lbs., at age 52, still 6'0" tall. My younger brother is 6'0" tall, weighs 225 lbs., with green eyes and dirty blonde hair. We share the same birth mother Sharon Emrick, maiden name Lawson deceased 6-28-2005 born 12-9-1941. We also had a half sister, Melody Emrick, born 3-3-1958, but deceased 4-10-2007. Melody was born on 3-3-1958, in Garrett, Indiana, to Ellen J. (Ritter) Miller and David L. Emrick. Melody also had blue eyes and dark brown hair. Marion MacDonald was the county director that place me and commented to my adoptive mother that she resembled my birth mother had blonde hair, blue eyes. My adoptive parents paid for all the hospital care for my birth mother and I and the Dr. It was handled through the Elkhart Superior Court, Cause no. 31135 Judge Charles E. Huges. My adoptive parents Atty: Harrison A. Chruch I was told that I have an older birth sister 2 years by my birth parents. 2 half birth brothers by my birth mother's first marriage. At the time I was put up Mrs. MacDonald told my adoptive parents that my birth parents were living in a car with my birth sister and that she had given my two birth brothers to their grandparents to raise, and that is why I was put up. I don't know who's parents they went to she didn't say. I was also told by my adoptive mother that my birth mother didn't want to give me up but they had no choice due to their situation, that is what my adoptive mother was told. I want my birth mother to know that she did the right thing, as it turns out I was a very ill child. I spent most of my first two years of life in the hospital with kidney infections and my adoptive parents were financially able to give me the care I needed. I have been fine medically until I had children and since then I have had 12 surguries and cyst and tumor issues that have made me want to know my birth families medical history. I have two grown daughters and 4 grandchildren, and 3 of them are girls and I am concerned for them that I have no medical history to give them. So if nothing else I would at least to have a family history so that I would be able to give them something to take with them for future use. I want to thank her, if I am anything like her then it must have been a horrific event in her life that she may still carry with her, as I tend to hang on to past things deep inside. I want to put her mind at ease and let her know only a true loving mother would be able to do what she did for my best interest. I am open to meeting any of my birth family that may be found.
