My grandmother always said she was related to the Adams presidents, and I'd like to find the connection. A distantly related cousin told me that Emma might have been adopted, and since I cannot trace Emma's ancestors to any Adams, this is more evidence that she was adopted. (Update) According to what we've seen on Ancestry.com, her birth city was Chippewa Falls, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. However, this may have been the home of her adoptive parents. I have done DNA testing with 23andme. (Update) A librarian at UW Eau Claire found the probate record of Emma's mother, Lucinda Rose. In it, on page 60, it specifically states that Emma is her adopted daughter. So what was just lore is now proven real. Emma Rose was indeed adopted. Additional information that might be helpful is that in the 1890 Wisconsin state census record, it states that Emma's parents were born in Maine. This must be her birth parents because Jeremiah and Lucinda Rose, her adoptive parents were born in Ohio and Kentucky respectively. So, I'm not sure if Emma was born in Wisconsin or Maine and then brought to Wisconsin for adoption. Again, my grandma says we are related to the Adams presidents through her. My distant cousin, also a relative of Emma Rose/Adams said that there is a possibility that she may be American Indian. We both have done our DNA and there doesn't seem to be any American Indian DNA, so perhaps that is family lore. I did my 23andme back in 2015, and at that time, they said I had a small amount of "Asian" DNA, and one of my doctors said "Oh, that's American Indian". But now, when I look at my ancestry report from 23&me, that small amount of "Asian" DNA is no longer there. E. J. Tole of the St. John's Episcopal Church. Had a son born about ?-?-1889, possibly in Chautauqua Co., NY. Moved to Janesville, WI sometime before 6-?-1891. Almous died in Silver Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY in 11-?-1891 as the result of a fall from a ladder while painting a house. They must have been visiting relatives or friends in Silver Creek for Thanksgiving. Almous worked for a railroad. Ann Turner continued living in Janesville with her children until 1893 when the Nolans adopted my grandmother, Vera Estalla. They did not adopt her brother. His fate is unknown. After the adoption, Ann Turner disappeared from Janesville. It is possible she may have moved to Milwaukee. After her husband's death, Ann worked as a dress maker then as a maid for Mrs. Boub in Janesville. Thomas Nolan was a prominent attorney and he handled the adoption himself. He also represented various railroads. I have tested my late aunt's autosomal DNA on Family Tree DNA. So far, there are no close matches. I do have the adoption file, including Vera's original birth certificate as well as her mother's testimony at the adoption hearing. Ann Turner appears in the 1892 Janesville Directory as the widow of Almous Turner. Almous Turner does not appear in any US census. The Turner matches are for Turners with Colonial VA roots. Two matches share Lodowyck Williams of Colonial NY as an ancestor. This particular line is Dutch. I am still building out the tree to determine if there is any potential connection to either the Turner side or the mother's side. The fate of my grandmother's brother remains unknown. It is possible he may have been placed in an orphanage in 1893, stayed with his mother, or died without issue. The 1892 NY State census shows 2 Turner families in Silver Creek. I have been in contact with the relative of one and can find no connection. The other family, Henry Turner, immigrated from Germany. I contacted a researcher but the descendant of this line, who is not the researcher, does not want to take a DNA test. I have not learned very much about this family but have built a public tree for them on Ancestry. Birth father of Lazarus child possibly took child out of orphanage - not known. He left wife before she was placed in asylum. She died in hospital in 1910. Older siblings reconnected after grown, they did not find youngest child with surname Lazarus. My mother is 90 years old - she knows very little of her father's family. He and his siblings with surname of Supan were in orphanage until adults - they did not locate youngest sibling. According to my mother's father, Joseph Supan, his mother was placed in asylum when she was arrested in 1897 for trying to break into house they had been forced out of when she could not find work to pay rent. Her husband, George Lazarus had left her with her three children and their new baby. The four children were placed in the orphanage. I understand that the orphanage has been destroyed by fire at some point. (Update) We have no definite information on the birth parents. Birth mother was approximately 35 - 45 at time of birth. All Other Information: The family story goes that she was dropped off at the Pfister doorstep shortly after birth, the natural birth mother was apparently an unwed teenager in trouble, only 15 years old that knew the Peter Pfister family was unable of having children of their own. Natural birth mother may of been a cousin to the Pfisters, surname Kleiner, I know of two candidates. Natural birth mother may of been a neighbor that knew the Pfister family well. In 1895, Peter Pfister living at 740 6th, Peter being an insurance agent that once was a lithographer. At this time Peter was living in the same building or next door to an insurance agent and also a neighbor that was a lithographer, both men also had daughters that would of been roughly age 15-17 by 12-1896. In 1896, Peter Pfister was living at 621 10th Street, home of his mother and siblings. The family story has a Judge Bohr that did the probate on the day she was born suggesting this was planned ahead of time, however studying old censuses and old artifacts, the judge may of been Emil Wallber of Milwaukee, no Judge Bohr can be found, and unlikely the adoption was even initiated on the day of birth.
