All Other Information: Bessie Shreves was a second mother to me and my sister. She helped my mother and father in exchange for living with us. Mother always said she was related to us. She is gone to heaven now, but we loved her very much. She worked as a servant to another of our ancestors, Benjamin Brinton from Iowa, in the 1925 Iowa census. In the Iowa 1905 Census directory, she is listed as at same address as Dorcus Shreves, widow of Jonathan Shreves, also of Iowa. In this directory, the lived at Brighton, Iowa. My home town. I have found that Jonathan and Dorcus adopted a daughter, Annice Lind. With Bessie's father's last name being Lind, I am trying to find if Bessie might be Annice's birth sister and if Dorcus and Jonathan adopted her also because as a child, I only knew her last name to be Shreves. Sometimes spelled Shreeves. some of this information I gathered from different Iowa census. I also know that she lived in Answorth, Iowa as a servant to a man named Cady.Bessie never married. This I was told by my mother. Mom died in 2002 and my father has alzimers and only 1 uncle and 1 aunt left, with no more info. I loved this woman and want her to be more than a servant in my geneology reserch results. She needs her rightful place listed in the family history pages. please help me. thank Bessie died 3-15-1967 at the age of 90. She died in Washington, Iowa USA. Buried at the Brighton, Iowa, Hillcrest cemetary. Her tombstone lies close to Jonathan and Dorcus Stones. Jonathan was a civil war union soldier 1898-1925. He is deceased and passed away prob 10 yearrs ago at perhaps age 80. His wife (not my birth mother) passed within the past 2-3 years. This information was given to me by Audrey Shaffer of Keokuk, Iowa who worked at the Hennegiges Plant in Keokuk, Iowa with Linda Stevens, Charles daughter in law. My actual paperwork adoption went through Polk County District Court, Des Moines, Iowa when I was one year old. In 6-?-1953. I believe. I have always been told the story...that my birth mother was a student at Drake University (which is in Des Moines) and that she was from California. She was 18 years old when she gave birth to me (At least this is what I was always told) I was told that my birth father was a Des Moines Police Officer...who was married. Our mother nursed him until he was 6 weeks old, which is when they found an adoptive family. Our mother wanted to keep him, but her parents refused to assist her, as well as lay claim to him.5 or 6 years later, our mother went back to Sioux City. I have also been told, but with no confirmation, that my birth father worked in or around Iowa City. And I was told that my birth mother did not marry him, but married someone else in Iowa, possibly a farmer. I also was told, again with no confirmation, that my birth mother's family may have been from New Mexico and have had ties to the newspaper or publishing business. I was told that my birth mother was petite with brown hair, and that my birth father was tall and blonde. Please, please, please help me find any of my birth family members. I am alone, never had children, have lost both of my adoptive parents and have lost most of my relatives from their families. He or she was born in 12-12-1959 in Tipton Iowa. My mother was 15 years old and her husband was 16 years old. The doctor that delivered the baby was name Dr. Kopsa. She has a home delivery and heard the baby crying and they said it was a boy. Later that night the doctor called back saying the baby died. But my mom never got a death certificate or birth certificate. We don’t know what happen to him or if he was a her. They both got married before the baby was born.
